About World Hepatitis Day 2016

Though World Hepatitis Day (July 28th) has passed, we continue to spread awareness of this movement to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030.

At the World Health Assembly in May, WHO Member States are set to adopt the first ever eliminating strategy for viral hepatitis, with ambitious targets and a goal to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. This will be the first time national governments sign up and commit to the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis.
To achieve this ambitious goal, it will require greater awareness, increased diagnosis and key interventions including universal vaccination, blood and injection safety, harm reduction and treatment are all needed.

Key facts on Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a term for inflammatory diseases of the liver, which range from mild and self-limited to severe, progressive forms leading to liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • In the Western Pacific Region (which includes the South Pacific Islands), more people die from hepatitis than HIV, TB and malaria combined.
  • One quarter of the world’s population lives in the Western Pacific, but the Region bears 40% of the world’s deaths caused by hepatitis. Hepatitis kills more than 1500 people every day in the Region
  • The consequences of chronic hepatitis B and C infections – cirrhosis and liver cancer – are responsible for 94% of deaths associated with hepatitis infections. Liver cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the Asia–Pacific region, and approximately 78% of liver cancer cases are a result of chronic viral hepatitis B or C.

Despite this high burden, the levels of awareness and political and financial engagement have been insufficient to address this public health challenge.
