Heart disease is a major cause of health hazard in PNG and South Pacific Islands. More needs to be done to improve the heart health in our community.

To test the health of your patient’s heart, the most common method is using a medical device known as an electrocardiograph (ECG). The ECG is commonly used to help diagnose for angina (insufficient blood flow to the heart), heart attacks, or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

How it works is the ECG records the electrical activity of the heart, to determine the rate and rhythm of the heart. The heart produces tiny electrical impulses which spread through the heart muscle to make the heart contract. These impulses can be detected by the ECG machine. You may have an ECG to help find the cause of symptoms such as the feeling of a ‘thumping heart’ (palpitations) or chest pain. Sometimes it is done as part of routine tests – for example, before you have an operation.

The ECG test is a simple 5 minute test and is a painless and non-evasive procedure. The device is essential for health professionals looking to provide early detection and treatment for heart disease for their patients.
